Hessian companies in the environmental technology sector are active in many different fields – such as water and waste water, waste and recycling, renewable energies, energy efficiency and air quality control. About 51,000 skilled personnel are developing future-oriented technologies for a sustainable economy in these fields. They are spread across about 1300 industrial enterprises, engineering companies and consulting firms.

More than 90% of Hessen’s environmental technology sector is anchored in small and mid-sized companies. But there are also several global companies developing innovative technical solutions from here for worldwide use.
Apart from providing a strong market, Hessen hosts a large number of respected institutions of higher education and research establishments in the environmental technology field. Owing to the interdisciplinary nature of their work, these are based in a whole range of different specialist areas.

Companies are investing in highly qualified personnel in order to prevail against the competition on international markets. Alongside instruction and advanced professional training within businesses, higher education courses at ten institutions across Hessen intensively prepare personnel for their future roles in companies and research.

“Northern Hessen has made a name for itself nationally and internationally in the renewable energies sector through the University of Kassel, the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology (IWES) and the Kompetenznetzwerk Dezentrale Energietechnologien (deENet), as well as a multitude of companies active in renewable energies.”
