As the birthplace of the Grimm Brothers, Jakob and Wilhelm, Hanau is where the German Fairy Tale Route starts. The town is situated directly on the River Main and was settled by French Huguenots in the 17th century. The French influence is most apparent in the gardens of Philippsruhe Castle, which is one of the earliest examples of Versailles architecture in Germany. A short distance away, connected by the Burgallee, is the Wilhelmsbad state park, a former spa complex of the 18th century. Hanau city centre has numerous shopping facilities as well as restaurants and cafés. Don’t miss theatrical performances of Grimms’ Fairy Tales (Märchenfestspiele), held every year during spring and summer in the amphitheatre next to Philippsruhe Castle.
