Located favourably at the heart of Germany and Europe, Hessen has developed into an international transport hub. The state is distinguished by its first-class network of air, rail and road links.
The logistics sector is one of the strongest parts of Hessen’s economy. About 200,000 people are employed in it. Frankfurt Airport alone, which handles more than 2 million tonnes of air freight every year, provides employment for around 70,000 people. Frankfurt is Europe’s leading airport in terms of freight management.
Roughly 300 logistics companies are represented in ‘Cargo City’, among them global companies such as DHL Global Forwarding and Federal Express. With the ‘House of Logistics & Mobility’, a research centre forging connections between science and business is being developed in the immediate vicinity of Frankfurt Airport.
Northern Hessen has established itself as a centre for distribution logistics. Here, logistics providers benefit from the latest cut-off time possible: nowhere else can consignments be accepted so late for guaranteed delivery to anywhere in Germany the following day. This is taken advantage of by many firms including GLS, Amazon, Libri and Volkswagen.
“Frankfurt Airport is the home airport of Lufthansa Cargo.
This is where international freight flows meet. The heart of the international air cargo business beats here. Europe’s largest cargo airport provides us with an excellent set of conditions – a location in the middle of the European continent, with excellent infrastructure, important strategic partners and strong industrial enterprises in the immediate vicinity.”
